Carlisle, Castle The North

photo-19Monday, August 18, 2014

Today we visited Carlisle Castle in The North, took us about 3 hours from our home base in Matlock Bath. The castle is over 900 years old.

Due to it’s proximity to the Scottish border this is has long been a defensive site.  It was an outpost of Hadrian’s Wall.

Carlisle Castle has an interesting museum, dungeon and King’s quarters.

In one of Carlisle’s jails is a number of carvings on the wall.  Historians think that those drawings were from a bored prison guard.

We needed to push on so we didn’t spend much time here.
